Montage
I am realizing now that almost every movie, in some way or another, has montage in it. I watched Cop Out, Kick-Ass, Get Him to the Greek, and Boondock Saints 2. Each of these movies has had a montage in it at some point. I never really noticed it until I started looking for it and knowing what to look for. These movies listed above are action/ adventure movies, which generally have montages anyway, according to what we discussed in class, but then I watched a non- action movie called The Princess Diaries and there was a montage in that too. It seems to me that when a director is in doubt about what to do next....they throw in a montage. Works every time!

Yes, I feel like montage in the modern Hollywood sense gets overused. It can be an effective tool, but also a crutch for less creative folks. There are certainly other story devices that better serve a film than montage sometimes, but montage is like an instant bridge forward in the story, just add water. Don't forget that montage in the traditional, historical sense is much more than just a musical interlude used to compress time. It's an actual analytical editing process that precedes the sound era. We'll be looking at some examples to offer more clarification later this week in class.
